"Cookson and Clegg Limited have been producing clothing in Blackburn, Lancashire since 1860 making us one of the longest serving UK clothing manufacturers"
Our story begins back in 1860, when Cookson and Clegg started manufacturing leather workwear for coal delivery men. The first designs comprised of a hard wearing hat with long flap attachment in order to provide protection when carrying the heavy coal sacks. Workwear and military uniforms have always been closely linked within the clothing industry so it was a natural progression for Cookson's to expand into this area, and by 1914 we were proudly making uniforms for the British Army in World War 1.
Our close relationship with the Ministry of Defence has continued through the subsequent years and with it our technical expertise and flexibility grew to deal with an increasingly diverse range of products. The two Cookson archive pieces pictured here both date from the 1950's and show a battle-dress tunic which we were mass-producing by then, as well as a complex Cold-Weather Parka, requiring specialist sewing skills.
Military clothing is widely accepted as a standard bearer for technological advances in manufacture and has long been a source of inspiration for private buyers and designers. Our expertise in the area has therefore led to collaborations with some of the world's most respected clothing brands.
We, the team at Cookson and Clegg are proud to continue the tradition of producing quality clothing from our UK factory that is sold in some of the most prestigious retail stores in the world.
